Working at the Writing Center - Alizarin Capeland
Starting this semester, I began working at the Writing Center here on campus. My first semester, I took a class to help prepare me for this job, to give the best effort I could. While working there, I realized I have come to appreciate student writing in a new way that my limited exposure before kept me from. Before, I had only read a handful of papers that were not my own or professionally made so I had very little idea of how others write or common pitfalls that I hadn't noticed before. Now, I get a variety of writers asking for my advice. These range from basic-level learners just trying to understand college-level writing to those applying to graduate schools. Each client has their own charms and I really get a sense of who they are based on their writing style alone. Additionally, I get to see how students interpret prompts from professors and how they express what they are interested in. This is especially true for students who rebook with me and allow me to see their work in other classes and with a variety of topics.
