Carolyne Rivera - The Shift That Breaks the Closest Bonds and Turns Friends to Enemies
One of the most popular story arcs that has been taking place in modern movies in the past few years, especially in prequel movies is the transition of an otherwise "good" character to a villain. Particularly in stories I know, like Star Wars, Wicked, Transformers, and the Hunger Games, their prequel stories began with the audience knowing one of the characters would become a fierce villain, but they are usually introduced as a somewhat kind or heroic person and nowhere near like the cruel villain the audience has already seen.
In Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker and his master and best friend Obi-wan Kenobi had a seemingly unbreakable bond until Anakin fell to the Dark Side and turned against everyone he had ever loved or in the animated Transformers One, Optimus Prime and Megatron were the closest of friends until Megatron became relentlessly bent on revenge and he became a monster, severing their friendship. Even Coriolanus Snow had briefly shown potential to love before he fully embraced his ruthless nature and became a vicious and murderous dictator.
The purpose of these stories, I believe, is to give a new depth to characters the audience thought they already understood and to prove that even the best heroes are not infallible. Nothing is ever guaranteed and under the right circumstances, unbreakable bonds and the purest of hearts can be corrupted and close friendships can turn into bitter rivalries.
