Carolyne Rivera - The Hero's Journey vs. The Writer's Journey

Last Christmas, my aunt gave me a book called the Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler, which basically a description of the Hero's Journey, but from a writer's perspective. This class had not started yet and I had never heard of the Hero's Journey before, so this was a brand new concept. Now that I have a firm grasp on it, this book has become even more interesting.

It walks the writer through each stage of the journey and teaches them how to craft it and the significance of creating characters that go through that arc. In this class, we have focused on this idea from the perspective of the hero themselves, and focused less on the writer's inspiration for such choices, but as an aspiring writer myself, this is just as interesting. It is often very difficult to create completely new, complex characters that both contribute to the narrative and go through meaningful and impactful character arcs, so the writer must have a very firm and intentional understanding of what they are writing to give their writing meaning.

Every character is some shard of reflection upon their author - their experiences, beliefs, and their dreams - so in creating a new character, it is imperative that they walk down their own writer's journey so every piece of themselves they have expressed can also achieve the same fulfillment in their heroic journeys.
