The Fight for Creativity - The Unwanteds (Christian Callaghan)
Have you ever felt unwanted or excluded from a part of society where access can only be granted through conformation to the beliefs of the people within? Highly specific, yes but something that occurs to many people who feel like out casts in society. One such reflection of this idea comes from the book the series The Unwanteds in particular book 1.
The book takes place in Quill which is comprised of 3 different factions in society wanteds, necessaries and the unwanteds. The story follows Alex Stowe, who is an Unwanted. In this society, being an unwanted means having a creative mind which illegal. He expects execution, but instead, he discovers a secret place called Artimé. Artimé is a hidden world where creativity is encouraged, and artistic skills like painting, music, and acting are taught as powerful forms of magic. Under the of teaching of a man named Mr. Today, the Unwanteds learn to embrace their talents and grow stronger. However, the world of Quill is never far away, and tensions between the two societies rise, leading to conflict. Alex’s journey becomes even more complicated because his twin brother, Aaron, remains in Quill as a Wanted, creating a personal and emotional struggle between loyalty to family and loyalty to freedom.
This conflict between what is and is not allowed in a society and how we fit in is a battle many of us fight in our everyday lives. The unwanteds eventually did "win" the conflict but it was only due to that fact that they stuck to their structure and core beliefs. A valuable lesson in our lives.
