Sofia Irwin - The Hero in a Sequel
THE HERO IN A SEQUEL
We’ve talked a lot about the general hero’s journey of “known, threshold to unknown, transformation, and return.” That’s pretty stereotypical and broad enough that it can be applied to most heroic stories.
But what’s next?
A hero’s story doesn’t have to end there. It’s not uncommon for authors to continue their stories in a new episode or book of a series. For example, Harry Potter didn’t stay in the muggle world after defeating Professor Quirrell, but he returned after the summer was over to begin his second year. The Pevensie children eventually found their way back to Narnia. Even Maverick was called back to teach at Top Gun after 30 years. What about these characters? They aren’t entering into the Unknown like they were in their initial adventure, but there’s still a whole plot that they’re unaware of until they get there.
Maverick is an especially interesting case because he returns to the same place, but as an instructor rather than a student. I suppose that in itself is a jump into the unknown since he’s never taught at the flight school before. But still, the point is that he can use what he’s learned in the last movie to help him become a good leader for the cadets. Same for Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. They return to Hogwarts/Camp Half Blood another year older and more experienced, so they’re not starting from scratch like they were in the first books.
I’m not entirely sure what to think about this, actually, so I’m going to have to cut this one short. Hopefully it sparks some thoughts, though. I'll try and update this one if I think of anything else to add
