Sacrifice and What we are Willing to Give up - Christian Callaghan

Sacrifice - "an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy". What is of greater importance the future of all of mankind or spending precious time with you daughter and raising her into an adult? That was the question that Cooper from the movie Interstellar was faced with.

Interstellar is directed by Christopher Nolan and is a science fiction film that revolves humanity’s struggle to survive as Earth becomes increasingly uninhabitable. The story follows Cooper, a former NASA pilot now farmer, who is recruited to join a space expedition tasked with finding a new planet where humanity can relocate. In order to do that the crew must travel through a wormhole near Saturn to explore distant worlds in another galaxy.

The film examines complex scientific concepts such as time dilation, black holes, and the theory of relativity, based in real scientific theories while also exploring deeply emotional human experiences. Central to the story is the relationship between Cooper and his daughter names Murphy, highlighting the emotional costs of exploration and sacrifice.

In life we are constantly needing to weigh the importance of our values/things, and this is one such significant example of this. The relationship between a father and his child is a strong bond to tear but if it meant that the world would be better off one might be willing to let their daughter grow up without a father.
