Noah Halili - The Trickster Archetype in Band of Brothers

April 16, 2025

In the Hero’s Journey, there are various character archetypes that frequently appear during the myth. One such archetype is “The Trickster” often portrayed in the form of comical characters or companions. Irish Marsh writes, “For one, they cut big egos to bring both Heroes and audiences down to earth. They provide laughter, help the audience realize common bonds, and point out folly and hypocrisy” (Marsh 2023). In Band of Brothers and the story of Easy Company, one paratrooper relates heavily to this archetype, Sergeant George Luz.

While Band of Brothers is a retelling of the true stories of Luz and Easy Company during WWII, many of the soldiers embody aspects of the Hero’s Journey. Sergeant Luz is immediately identified in the miniseries as the jokester of the company. The viewer's first interaction with his antics is in Episode 1: Currahee. During a training exercise, some members of the company convince Luz to imitate a major in order to get their captain, Sobel, to cut through some barbed wire fence. Sobel had been the leader of Easy Company for all of their training and often punished his troops for even the smallest of errors. However, his action in this training exercise leads to Captain Sobel getting reprimanded by his superior officers for his mistake as the fence belonged to a local. In this particular example, Sergeant Luz brings Captain Sobel down to Earth by making him make a mistake. Sobel is placed in the position of the members of the company who had been similarly reprimanded for somewhat ridiculous errors.

Beyond their training, Sergeant Luz continues to crack jokes and make soldiers laugh throughout the miniseries. Another example relevant to this discussion is a scene between himself and Sergeant Carwood Lipton. The exchange occurs during episode 7: The Breaking Point after an artillery bombardment. During the bombardment, the company leader, Lieutenant Dike, orders Lipton to handle the troops being bombarded while he runs for help away from the fighting. Luz, who witnesses this interaction, begins retelling the story to other members of the company and mimicking Dike’s cowardly decision. Lipton eventually pulls Luz aside to tell him to stop making fun of Dike as it could damage the focus and morale of the troops. Luz agrees, however as he walks away from Lipton, he makes a final imitation of Dike as he yawns, something Dike often did between battles. In this example, Luz is upholding the aspect of the Trickster that calls out hypocrisy and folly. He makes it clear in his own actions that Lieutenant Dike is undeserving of their respect and the company as a whole appears to view him as cowardly. Whenever danger nears, Lieutenant Dike appears to be retreating and leaving his men to withstand the attack alone.

These are just two examples of the many times Luz makes a joke or pokes fun at those around him. He often brings those around him down to Earth and in many ways helped maintain the humanity in his fellow paratroopers. Sergeant Luz is a mischievous person and is frequently involved in many of the funny moments that appear in the miniseries. He fulfills the role of the Trickster in the overall journey of Easy Company throughout the war.
