Noah Halili - Medic's Interior Journey

Sergeant Eugene Roe, or as his brothers-in-arms referred to him as, Doc, is a Easy Company medic portrayed in the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers. Throughout their journey, Doc Roe can be seen aiding members of the company and placing their health at the top of his priorities. However, as the war progressed viewers saw a shift in mentality for Doc Roe. Early on, he seems composed, calm, and determined to save the wounded. As Easy Company’s exterior journey progresses, Doc Roe embarks on an interior journey as he realizes the horrors and cruelty of WWII.

Episode 6: Bastogne in Band of Brothers focuses exclusively on Doc Roe. In this episode, he rushes to aid as many soldiers as possible as they experience frequent German bombardments. In the beginning of the episode, Doc Roe is shown running around the Easy Company foxholes searching for medical supplies. During his search, the audience learns about Doc Roe and most notably discovers that he refuses to call soldiers by their nicknames. Instead he always uses their full first name to address them, something the other soldiers find ridiculous. As the bombardments continue to dwindle the Allied forces, we see Doc Roe get progressively more desperate and determined to save lives. At one point, a scouting team prepares to patrol when Doc attempts to join them. The sergeant leading the patrol orders him to stay behind in case they encounter trouble. While most medics would have gone about their business and allowed the patrol to leave, Doc Roe chose to stay exactly where he was and simply watch for their return. When that patrol inevitably goes wrong and the men are forced to retreat, Doc Roe is already prepared to aid the wounded. We see a new determination from Doc Roe showing his increased determination to save lives on the battlefield.

Furthermore, This particular part of the war saw Easy Company suffer the largest casualties they would see throughout the war. It is during this time that Doc Roe meets a nurse named Renee after he brings a wounded soldier to a military hospital. The two of them connect over their shared effort to save as many lives as possible after they discover that Allied forces had been cut off from the backline. It is through this bond that we are able to see Doc’s calm composure and compassion as he assures Renee that she is a special and skillful nurse. This nurse also helps Doc Roe relax and alleviates his constant desperation to save lives. However, by the end of the episode, Doc Roe witnesses the German bombing of the military hospital and discovers Renee’s death. The episode comes full circle, ending with Doc Roe bandaging a soldier using Renee’s bandana due to the lack of bandages. To further show his own interior journey and focus to move forward, he refers to that soldier by his nickname almost instinctively showing a growth in relationship between himself and the other paratroopers.
