Layers - Carter Jobe
I wanted to explore the idea of building layers in our lives, as presented by Ms. Soumakis. She presented this idea as a way in which we walk through our lives buidling layers as we figure things out. At first, we might have a vague understanding of something, but as we go on we will make it more real through painting the picture.
An important part of this is exploring multiple viewpoints on an issue. The more we see different viewpoints, the more we take bits and pieces of these and we build our own viewpoints and our unique experiences make us into our very own person.
Another interesting part she spoke on which I very much related to was the thought of going into something like a new experience with the goal of going home, of reaping all the rewards of the journey but not experiencing it through our eyes patiently.
I relate this to when a couple months ago, I went skiing for the first time. It was extremely cold, and rather unpleasant to be outdoors. Because of this, while I did want to go on the trip, I found myself longing for my bed back home when the wind blew and my fingers felt frozen. Despite this, I had a wonderful time and made a lot of memories.
Funnily enough, when I got back home and into my bed, I felt a longing for the ski resort I was at just a day ago. I believe we can all relate to this post vacation clarity, where we realize that despite our homesickness and our discomfort with the unknown, we were having the time of our lives. It is an important reminder to live in the moment and never take new experiences for granted.
