Gracie Kay Close- Throne of Glass & Journey
SPOILER WARNING: this is an amazing series and I will be talking about major plot points so if you want to eventually read be warned....
I have read a series by Sara J. Maas titled Throne of Glass, that follows an assassin into the politics of her kingdom, eventually saving the kingdom from evil magic. That is the shortest summary of the book imaginable, especially given the series is 8 books long each ranging from 300 to 1000 pages long. After reading The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and talking about key aspects of a heroes journey I could not help but reference back to this series in particular.
Celaena, the main character, is secretly the chosen one destined to save her kingdom from ruin. In literature, this trope usually follows a character that embarks on a journey(of course) to then eventually fulfill said prophecy placed upon them. Maas does an excellent job of fulfilling these troped throughout the novels while also placing similar quests amongst the other MANY characters Celaena comes across. In the first two novels, the books cover the chapter discussed in the The Hero with a Thousand Faces, the refusal to call. Celaena spends over a decade refusing this destiny she knows is hers to fulfill. Maas demonstrates this with refusal of self as Celaena is not even her true name...
There are so many qualities within these books that demonstrate the many aspects of a journey we have discussed in class. Often times when we had class discussions on such, I would reference back to this series to truly understand.
