Emily Tucker- Kenosis

Kenosis is a term often used to describe when Jesus came down from heaven to earth, and became human, thus relinquishing some of his divine attributes (incarnation). It also means "self-emptying". A common attribute that I would connect with this is humility. Humility shows up in our relationships with other people when we choose to "empty" ourselves of our own wants and desires for the betterment of others. Along with this is servitude. Not forced servitude but choosing to serve others of your own volition. In the Bible, it claims that Jesus "emptied himself, taking the form of a servant" (Philippians2:7). Sacrificing ourselves in order to help others is an act of kenosis. Just as Jesus came to earth, and suffered in human form, sacrificing the glories of heaven for the sake of mankind, we should practice kenosis to show our love for other people. Sacrificial love has the ability to form deeper friendships and connections than almost anything else. Love, friendship, and happiness are results of kenosis. As humans, we can experience joy through self-emptying, knowing that we are a part of something bigger than just ourselves. The world doesn't revolve around us, and when we come to accept and realize that, then self-emptying seems to follow suite.  We can be fulfilled and satisfied in the act of kenosis.
