Christian Callaghan - The Martian (Flight or Fight)
Times of crisis show us who we are at our core as our reactions to these events show us and others who we are at our core. The theorem behind this is called the flight or fight response and it is geared toward how we react in moments of extreme stress. A book that relates to such a response is The Martian:
The novel is heavily grounded in science and engineering, presenting detailed solutions to the challenges of surviving on Mars. Despite the serious circumstances, Watney's witty and resilient personality adds humor and humanity to the story.
The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney, an astronaut who is mistakenly left for dead behind on Mars after a violent dust storm forces his crew to evacuate. Alone on an uninhabitable planet with limited supplies, Watney must use his knowledge of botany, engineering, and problem-solving to survive. He grows food, repairs damaged equipment, and establishes communication with NASA, which launches a massive international effort to rescue him.
He was in a moment of extreme stress + sorrow but instead of giving up on his ventures as an astronaut and researcher he fought his way through the difficulty and pursued through the process. This makes Mark Watney a man with a fight response instead of flight.
