Carolyne Rivera - Refusal of The Return from Narnia
At the end of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, the Pevensie siblings are full grown and had spent 15 years in the land of Narnia, ruling in the Golden Age, but one day, while hunting a white stag, they come upon the lamp post which is the landmark that shows them the portal back to the real world. They stumble through on accident and return back to their child bodies and the same moment in time when they traveled to Narnia in the first place. This is the point where they must return to where they started after their journey, but they each go through their struggles with this.
Lucy and Peter struggle especially because they had everything they had ever wanted in Narnia. Lucy had fallen in love with that world and she had transformed from a terrified child to a strong and confident young woman. Peter had become strong and capable, ruling as the high king for years and had finally been able to fulfill his role as the eldest to protect his family and everyone else who relied on him but he had now returned to being merely a child. In the movie, Lucy tries to return back into the wardrobe the following night, but the Professor tells her that her adventure has come to its end and their is no point trying to go back. A year later, Peter is still desperate to go back and is anxious every day, believing it is only a matter of time before they can all return.
Even watching the movie, I still get mad when they come back through the wardrobe and are separated from Narnia, even though this is a necessary part of the hero's journey. No matter how wonderful the adventure, every hero must eventually return and apply those lessons to their real life, of which the adventure is only a part. Denial and refusal may be a part of this stage, but when acceptance comes, the hero can grow and become a greater person. The Pevensies eventually learned all they could from Narnia, so it was up to them to decide what to do with that knowledge and how it would affect them both during and after their lives.
