Bella Caracappa: Music when Hiking

During class and in the American Camino book, I heard that most hikers/pilgrims don’t listen to music during their hikes. People often argue that music distracts you from nature and interacting with people on the trail, as it proves to be a blockage for the spiritual journey that you are meant to be on. However, personally, I believe that music is what makes the hike fun.

Music is honestly one of the deciding factors in motivating me to hike. First, I would like to say that I have a playlist for almost all important occasions throughout the day, such as driving, reading, studying, and even walking to and from classes. Music provides an avenue to focus on specific tasks, and I feel that without it, I would not get as much done as I do.

In relation to hiking, music would better help me focus on my surroundings during an excursion as it provides a sense of motivation and limits distractions so that I can focus. Though, I do not particularly enjoy hiking (Based on the fact that I went once, got caught in a thunderstorm, of which I am deathly afraid, and never went again), I feel that having music playing through my headphones would make it much more enjoyable.
