Bella Caracappa: Attributes of a Hero

The definition of a hero has changed and expanded throughout time. In ancient times, heroes were considered to be people who fought in wars, were of divine or noble bloodlines, had fame and glory, and conquered countries. We can attribute these characteristics to ancient heroes such as Odysseus, Gilgamesh, and Achilles.

However, today, we have a very different definition of a hero. Instead of those from divine or noble bloodlines, we connect more with the heroic underdog, such as Captain America, who rose in the ranks despite his poor health and physical condition. We also don’t see the people who have gone out to conquer countries to be heroic, as we often see these characters as villains; take Erik Killmonger from Black Panther when he tried to take over Wakanda to give the technology they have to the outside world. In conclusion, the attributes of a hero have evolved into what they are today because of political climates, people, and our definition of right and wrong. The definition of who we consider to be a hero will most definitely continue to change and evolve.
