Angelina Tran - Some Notes on Uncharted Way: Aesthetic Journeys on Land, Sea, and Within
Upon reading the Uncharted Way: Aesthetic Journeys on Land, Sea, and Within, I had just a couple notes to touch on.
First off, the difference between idol and icon seems to be very slim. This distinction between idol and icon was in Bernini's elaboration on Teresea’s journey when comparing the sculpture Bernini created and Teresea’s accounts. Idol I would say is some person that can be viewed as the person you may want to be. This person is also considerably more reachable to talk to and possibly know them personally. In comparison, an icon would be someone who is almost unreachable or rather is just some ideal that we may want to follow or become. However, the difference is still quite slim for me to understand and see but they do often work together to describe an ideal thing or person.
Next, JMW’s painting techniques were so interesting to learn about and the backlash he received from it! After reading, I searched up some of JMW’s paintings and they were really beautiful and full of texture that still came through the screen. It is mind boggling for me to think that JMW received so much backlash despite how beautiful the paintings were and how much emotion they captured about the landscapes. JMW was really able to capture in his paintings the beauty of nature and the dangers of nature that make nature beautiful. It is the unknown and dangerous qualities of nature that attracts humans and for us to realize how beautiful the planet is. We know the danger of nature yet we run towards it, destroy it, protect it, and create it.
These were just some of the topics I wanted to discuss, but overall it was a really interesting chapter about beauty and journeys. The fact that the journeys are left unknown to the journeyer lets them realize how beautiful things are. It also relates to the type of people who actually seek that adrenaline rush and get happiness from that just like viewing beautiful things. It seems that we often seek the unknown because we crave learning and finding beauty in things.
