Angelina Tran - Dream stones in Wings of Fire
I have forgotten which book in the Wings of Fire Series that allowed the dragons to be in other dragon’s dreams to give messages but it reminded me so much about the class discussion on dreams. In class we discussed ideas about how the dream state could be more real than reality and where the un/subconscious wakes up. Similar to the stone that allowed the dragons to appear in other dragon’s dreams, the dragon’s dreams show how the dragon’s are connected to other dragons despite geographic distances. The stones serve as a representation of how all dragons are connected by being a dragon, having wings, talons, and scales and the qualities of wanting peace for their tribes, their homes. By appearing in other dragon’s dreams, the dragons are able to communicate beyond physical forms and reach the inner soul or un/subconscious of the dragons. Dragons in this story are able to see and talk to the “real” dragons in the dreams and are able to communicate plans and persuade enemies. This element in the story and the class discussion about dreams raised questions: Do we want to be able to communicate with the “real” souls or un/subconscious? We present ourselves differently from our un/subconscious already, so would humans be able to persuade enemies or just create more enemies? The difference in presenting ourselves may be due to cultural norms and our sense of privacy we often like to create. In terms of dreams, the dragon’s dreams shown were about the ongoing war that was going on and their enemies while ours often stray wildly from the realities. This could just mean that our un/subconscious does not speak directly to us but in forms of symbolic experiences.
