Angelina Tran - Are we real?

 In the class that President Kelly, his wife Angie, and another lady joined to discuss some of the readings and topics, we went over a very interesting idea. The idea questioned our current state of reality: How do we know that is “real" and that everything around us is also “real"? This was an interesting idea that I have never contemplated before that class session. I assumed that everything that I am able to see and touch are real but there is a contradicting idea of things you are not able to see. For example, the existence of other galaxies outside our Milky Way and creatures in the deepest depths of our oceans. I have a feeling that I will never be able to see these creatures or planets in person but I believe that they are “real” and they exist. Everything in and on this Earth that we are living on I believe is “real” and living. However, the question of a simulation and dream were raised in class: How do we know that we are not just living in a simulation or dream? The answer seems to be that we can not exactly disprove that statement. We are able to connect all around the world and describe our experiences that feel “real” to us and feel alive. Maybe if we are living in a dream in simulation it will be a fake complicated world to an upperbeing but for us it will always be “real” or something we value to us living in this world. It may be that the more important topic is to think about what we think and value about our world instead of if the world we live in is “real” to everything and everyone beyond this world.

Rose Baker - Herbert's "Dune" and Martyrs

  In class, we talked about Jesus and Christianity as an example of myth. Myths and martyrs are dangerous to systems of control because even if they’re suppressed, they can survive and grow stronger. They last because they’re tied to belief, memory, and emotion---things you can’t fully erase. That’s what makes them more powerful than systems built on forced order or control. Even though much of the early church died gruesome deaths, and were consistently ordered to stop spreading the gospel, the "myth" of Jesus has continued for over 2000 years.      In Frank Herbert's  Dune , we see something similar. The Bene Gesserit know how powerful myths can be, and instead of waiting for one to form naturally, they build one on purpose. Joanah Eresechima - Blue Lock's Exploration of Flow

In the sixth chapter of American Camino , the concept of flow is extensively explained in the context of spiritual walking. It is described as unification of action and awareness to create a state in which thoughts are non-existent. The hiker just moves through the world, extremely aware and focused on the wilderness around them but unable to thoroughly reflect on it in that moment. It is only afterwards that the hiker is able to recall the memories from their flow state. Flow can occur in different types of people like artists, scientists and athletes (Redick 249). I was actually very surprised to see this term in the book because it becomes one of the central components in a manga I read called Blue Lock.
