Alison Byrd: The Importance of storytelling

    Storytelling sparks imagination and reveals the endless possibilities the world holds. As a child, I looked forward to the bedtime stories my parents told me, those moments were the most exciting part of my day. Through those stories, I was introduced to new ideas and adventures that shaped how I saw the world. Storytelling is not limited to fairytales; it also includes the retelling of historical events, which helps us understand that past and avoid repeating its mistakes. Stories inspire dreams, and those dreams lead to future careers or passions. What begins as simple bedtime stories can turn into meaningful memories, helping us reflect on how far we have come.

    Since coming to college, I have realized how important storytelling is in forming connections. Especially in this class, where sharing personal experiences helps us understand each other’s backgrounds and how those moments shaped who we are. One of my favorite hobbies is binge-watching TV series or movies, and what I love most is the storyline, the twists and suspense that keep you guessing. Murder mysteries are especially thrilling because they immerse me in the narrative, making me feel like I am living it myself.

    Storytelling does not just tell someone else’s story, it invites the audience to step into the world being described and reflect on how it connects to their own experiences. Whether it is about the past, the future, or something entirely imagined, stories help us learn, dream, and grow.

    In the end, storytelling is more than entertainment. It is how we make sense of life, connect with others, and find meaning beyond the surface. Stories shape our minds, touch our souls, and make life richer.

Rose Baker - Herbert's "Dune" and Martyrs

  In class, we talked about Jesus and Christianity as an example of myth. Myths and martyrs are dangerous to systems of control because even if they’re suppressed, they can survive and grow stronger. They last because they’re tied to belief, memory, and emotion---things you can’t fully erase. That’s what makes them more powerful than systems built on forced order or control. Even though much of the early church died gruesome deaths, and were consistently ordered to stop spreading the gospel, the "myth" of Jesus has continued for over 2000 years.      In Frank Herbert's  Dune , we see something similar. Joanah Eresechima - Blue Lock's Exploration of Flow

In the sixth chapter of American Camino , the concept of flow is extensively explained in the context of spiritual walking. It is described as unification of action and awareness to create a state in which thoughts are non-existent. The hiker just moves through the world, extremely aware and focused on the wilderness around them but unable to thoroughly reflect on it in that moment. It is only afterwards that the hiker is able to recall the memories from their flow state. Flow can occur in different types of people like artists, scientists and athletes (Redick 249). I was actually very surprised to see this term in the book because it becomes one of the central components in a manga I read called Blue Lock.
